Neil Malhotra, The Edith M Cornell Professor of Political Economy at Stanford Graduate School of Business, has been named a 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellow in recognition of his work to better understand political polarization in the United States.

Malhotra is one of 28 scholars named by the Fellows program, all of whom are engaged in research to understand how and why American society has become so divided and possible ways to strengthen democracy.

Among Malhotra’s recent research projects was one that analyzed a massive data set from Meta to assess whether and how social media influenced attitudes about the 2020 election. Malhotra was a lead author on two of the four studies, part of an ongoing project examining the effects of Facebook and Instagram on polarization. Malhotra will continue the research with the help of the Carnegie award.

Malhotra is the author of Leading with Values (with Ken Shotts, Cambridge University Press) and the editor of Frontiers in Social Innovation (Harvard Business Review Press). He has authored over 90 articles on numerous topics, including American politics, political behavior, and survey methodology. His research has been published in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Science, Nature, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, among other outlets.
