In the Classroom
Students have the greatest opportunity to attain mastery in the various aspects of effective communication by taking a four-unit course throughout an entire quarter. Only through sustained study, practice, and feedback over an extended period of time can students build the competencies necessary to be an effective communicator throughout their career.
The Mastery Initiative offers a menu of different communication courses. Its flagship course is Strategic Communication which provides students the greatest opportunity to attain mastery in the various aspects of effective communication. There are also a number of electives on topics including political and scholarly communication.
Additionally, several faculty teach related elective courses in topics like negotiation, power, or message development which students are encouraged to take to further their mastery in communication.
Faculty at the School may invite the Mastery Initiative to provide coaching within their course for students working on projects or papers. This cooperative teaching/coaching approach provides "just in time" support for students when they need and want it most: right before a crucial paper or presentation. A primary vehicle where first-year MBA students receive coaching is in the Critical Analytical Thinking (CAT) course.
