Application Fee Waiver

Applicants who meet one of the following criteria may be eligible for a waiver of the $125 application fee:

  • GRE Fee Reduction Certificate Recipients (for the current academic year): Recipients are required to provide a scanned copy of the email from ETS that includes the GRE Fee Reduction Voucher Number. Information on the GRE Fee Reduction Program can be obtained from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  • American Economic Association Summer Training Program: Participants are required to provide verification of their participation from the AEA Summer Program Director at Howard University.

  • Introduction to Diversity in Doctoral Education and Scholarship (IDDEAS): Attendees are required to provide details about their participation in IDDEAS including dates and host institution.

  • McNair Scholars (current or former): McNair Scholars are required to provide verification of their McNair Scholar status from the McNair Scholars Program Director at their institution.

  • PhD Project Conference Participants (accepted to attend the current or previous year’s conference): Conference participants are required to provide verification of their approved conference acceptance from the PhD Project.

  • The PhD Excellence Initiative: Participants are required to provide verification of their participation from their research supervisor.

  • Research Scholar Initiative: Participants are required to provide verification of their participation from the program director or their research supervisor.

  • The Sadie Collective: (accepted to attend the current or previous year’s conference: Attendees are required to provide verification of their approved conference acceptance from The Sadie Collective.

Requesting an Application Fee Waiver

Important: If you meet one of the above criteria, please request a fee waiver by submitting this form by November 16. Please note, prior to submitting a fee waiver request, you need to have started the 2024 PhD application and entered the following information on the application: 

  • Citizenship 
  • Mailing address 
  • Permanent address
  • Undergraduate education 
  • Submit a GMAT or GRE score or enter the scheduled test date 
  • Upload a current CV/resume 

If you apply for a fee waiver, please do not pay the application fee until you find out if your request for a waiver is granted or not. If we deny your request for a waiver, we will instruct you to pay the fee. If your application fee waiver is approved, you will be given further instructions on how to proceed with your application.

Tips for Scanning and Submitting Documents

  • Do not password-protect the document or embed macros
  • Limit the file size to 10 MB
  • Configure the document to print full-size on 8.5 x 11” letter-size paper
