Abstract

Globalization importantly shapes economic growth in developing countries today. I propose two projects that will examine the role of global supply chains and managerial competence for firms’ participation in international trade, which is closely linked to entrepreneurship and innovation in emerging economies. These projects will exploit 3 unique proprietary datasets for China: transaction-level customs data; firm-level balance-sheet data; and firm-level management data. Given China’s weight in the world economy, it is important to understand and assess its spectacular growth experience. While its institutional context and process of economic development are unique, the Chinese case sheds light on underlying economic mechanisms relevant to other developing nations as well.
