Organization

Since 2010, Tilting Futures (formerly Global Citizen Year) has equipped 2,700+ young people from 100+ countries to create meaningful impact on global issues. Its Immersive Learning Programs enhance students’ emotional and intellectual skills through collaboration with diverse communities and cultures worldwide. Tilting Futures rolled out its Take Action Lab (TAL) program in 2023 as the updated core of its direct-impact work building on the learnings from its former year-long Fellowship program offered from 2010 to 2020 and its 12-week online Academy offered in 2020-2022. Current TAL Participants (approximately 100/year) complete a 4-week virtual curriculum then live with a global cohort and complete an apprenticeship focused on human rights as they are immersed in Capetown, South Africa. Tilters graduate into its lifelong network with a permanent perspective shift on the world, and what they’re capable of achieving within it.

Issue

How can Tilting Futures expand its reach among college-aged students participating in global immersive learning through diverse living cohorts and intentional apprenticeships to change the composition, operating system, and impact of the next generation of changemakers?

Situation

Tilting Futures has forged partnerships with colleges and universities to expand its reach and mission impact. These collaborations are primarily vehicles for increasing the number of young people who participate in the organization’s direct programming. Earlier this year, ACT conducted a springboard brainstorming session for Tilting Futures to address the issue of determining the first-mover higher education institutions that would be strong leaders in promoting and adopting its Take Action Lab program. During that session, Tilting Futures leadership recognized the opportunity to have widespread impact without being the only organization to deliver the program directly. In 2022, Tilting Futures received significant grants totaling $20 million to support its goals of effecting direct, widespread, and system-level impact.

Project Overview

While the success of its direct programming will still be a critical component of delivering its mission, Tilting Futures wants to scale its impact through U.S. higher education institutions themselves executing the immersive education programs and promoting the programs’ learnings. Tilting Futures seeks a project team to conduct a market assessment and segmentation of higher education institutions and to develop a higher-ed partnership engagement strategy including vehicles and forums for connecting with these institutions. This partnership strategy may also address targeted messaging around the benefits of global immersive learning for each segment.
